Shannon Stanton
The Association for Women in Technology is pleased to announce their 2009 scholarship winner, Shannon Stanton. In applying for the scholarship, Shannon demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership as well as financial need.
AWT holds events such as the Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction to help raise proceeds for the AWT Charitable Foundation. This Foundation awards scholarships and gives funds to other causes that help support women and girls working or studying in the field of technology.
Shannon has demonstrated leadership through her on campus student organization Women in Computer Science and her 9 years of Girl Scout involvement as a patrol leader where she earned the distinguished Silver Award.
Shannon contributes to her community through volunteering her time in mentoring young children at Sunday school. Shannon also demonstrated ongoing scholastic achievement as a UCI Chancellor’s Scholarship Associate member National Honors Society AP Scholar with Distinction National Merit Semifinalist Honor.
Shannon achieved an unpaid Internship at Raytheon in Fullerton, CA where she debugged start-up Korn-shell scripts, and created and tested C programs. She participated in the American Computer Science League and Southern California Programming Competition for her high school.
Shannon is a University of California, Irvine student obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a minor in Linguistics.
Shannon was awarded $2,500, and she said “The money granted by this scholarship would ease the burden of paying for housing, books, and food not covered by savings. I am eager to get involved in research in the field of Computer Science”. Shannon’s plans include pursuit of a Master’s degree in Computer Science.
Shannon is currently a senior at UCI and continues to take an active role in volunteering with AWT! |
